Community pharmacy brings innovation to patient care

One of America’s most intractable challenges is the staggering cost of health care. Policy-makers agree that Medicare and Medicaid — not to mention the nation’s frayed health system overall — can’t continue to sustain the costs of care. One vital but underutilized resource that could help break the cost cycle is the nation’s 56,000 community pharmacies — and the pharmacists who staff them.

Community pharmacy’s long struggle to win professional recognition and a full seat at the health provider table is finally finding some traction as health systems, individual healthcare providers, health plans and plan payers begin to really connect the dots and build a workable framework for a more patient-centric, evidence-based and cost-effective system of care in the United States.

Momentum is growing for a higher level of pharmacy practice: one that broadens the role of the community pharmacist as an accessible, frontline health professional working in collaboration with a more integrated local healthcare network. Another example of the trend came last week, with the announcement by the American Hospital Association that it has endorsed the Walgreens WellTransitions coordinated care program.

AmerisourceBergen said it was offering the service under the Good Neighbor Pharmacy Provider Network's Collaborative Practice Coverage program, which allows independent pharmacists to benefit from GNPPN's collaborative practice agreements, which it has in 19 states.

John Kitzhaber, a Democrat, has signed what the National Association of Community Pharmacy has characterized as groundbreaking reform legislation that applies reasonable standards to how pharmacy benefit managers audit community pharmacies, provides increased transparency into generic prescription drug reimbursement and ensures that PBM administrators of prescription drug claims are registered within the state.

The Ownership Workshop, sponsored by McKesson and in part by Pharmacists Mutual and Live Oak Bank, gives prospective and current pharmacy owners an in-depth look at the industry and the financial, management and marketing skills needed to operate a successful pharmacy business. The three-day session also offers pharmacists 20 hours of continuing education credits.
