Retailers who had to beef up their cold and flu remedy supplies in the latter half of the season may not need to order as heavily over the summer as they may have in the past. A late start to the allergy season also is reducing the need for cough-cold stock.

SALT LAKE CITY — Zarbee's on Tuesday noted that more consumers have gravitated toward natural solutions over allopathic medicines, at least through the end of December, citing Nielsen scan data. 

For the 12 weeks ended Dec. 31, supplemental immune system boosters and homeopathic cough and cold medicines were up 13%, Zarbee's reported. The trend is even more pronounced across children's remedies with allopathic medicines declining 15% in the 12 week period while sales of pediatric natural solutions were up 19%, and now make up more than 20% of the category.

MADISON, N.J. — Pfizer Consumer Healthcare on Wednesday introduced Robitussin CoughCast, a new interactive tool that allows people to track cough activity in their local area. 

According to the company, already this year nearly 18.2 million U.S. adults have experienced cold and flu symptoms, and more than 18 million have reported suffering from cough, making it one of the most highly reported symptoms.

For the 77% of AccentHealth viewers who had experienced heartburn in the past year, 46% used an OTC treatment for relief. For top five symptoms/conditions experienced by viewers in the past year — including cold, cough/sore throat, headache, sinus/nasal congestion and runny nose — 43% of consumers used OTCs to address those conditions before other treatment options.

And cold symptoms and headaches were the most commonly suffered acute conditions, according to an online survey of more than 900 AccentHealth viewers that was conducted in September.

As many as 95% reported that either themselves or someone in their household had a cold, 92% suffered from a cough or sore throat, and 91% experienced a headache. The top conditions suffered chronically by respondents included sinus/nasal congestion (90%), muscle ache/pain (87%) and allergy (87%).

Among those health conditions treated with OTCs, AccentHealth viewers reported that allergies, sinus/nasal congestion and pain — including back, muscle and menstrual — to be the most commonly suffered chronic conditions. And cold symptoms and headaches were the most commonly suffered acute conditions, according to an online survey of more than 900 AccentHealth viewers that was conducted in September.

SALT LAKE CITY — Zarbee's has boosted its portfolio of all-natural cough products to include an extra-strength line.

Designed for those ages 12 years and older, the over-the-counter extra-strength all-natural cough products will supplement the existing line of Zarbee's original cough products, which currently are available for children ages 12 months and older. The new extra-strength products are specially formulated at a higher strength and dose than the original children's product, Zarbee's said.

SALT LAKE CITY — A company that manufactures a line of natural, drug-free cough products is donating more than 20,000 bottles to children in developing countries.

Zarbee's said Wednesday it would donate 22,872 bottles of cough products to K.I.D.S.: A Global Children's Charity, which will distribute them to underserved children in distressed areas of Guatemala and North Korea.

The company's products are made from a blend of vitamins and antioxidant-rich dark honeys, which it says calm coughs and sooth sore throats in young children.
