BOSTON — The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America announced Friday the appointment of Eli Lilly chairman, president and CEO John Lechleiter as PhRMA chairman at its annual meeting. The group also elected Celgene president and CEO Robert Hugin as chairman-elect of its board of directors and Pfizer president and CEO Ian Read as board treasurer. Lechleiter replaces Sanofi CEO Christopher Viehbacher as chairman.

PITTSBURGH — The Food and Drug Administration has approved a generic drug for lipid disorders made by Mylan, the company said Friday.

Mylan announced the approval and launch of fluvastatin capsules in the 20-mg and 40-mg strengths, a generic version of Novartis' Lescol. The drug is used to treat hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia, as well as prevention of cardiovascular disease.

The drug had sales of $27.9 million in 2011, according to IMS Health.

The Anglo-Swedish drug maker announced the launch of Dutoprol (metoprolol succinate extended-release and hydrochlorothiazide) tablets, calling it the first and only pill to combine the active ingredient of its Toprol-XL ER (metoprolol succinate) and hydrochlorothiazide.

HAYWARD, Calif. — Generic drug maker Impax Labs is challenging the patent protection on a drug used to treat postherpetic neuralgia, the company said Thursday.

Impax announced that it had filed a regulatory approval application with the Food and Drug Administration for gabapentin tablets, a generic version of Depomed's Gralise, in the 300-mg and 600-mg strengths.

GOUVERNEUR, N.Y. — Kinney Drugs announced on Thursday that supervising pharmacist James Murphy has been named the Kinney Drugs 2011 Pharmacist of the Year.

Murphy, who works at the store located at 119 Main St., Richfield Springs, N.Y., was selected based on customer votes at all 91 Kinney Drugs pharmacies in Central and Northern New York and Vermont.

ALLEGAN, Mich. — Perrigo on Thursday announced that it has initiated shipments of its guaifenesin extended-release tablets in the 600-mg strength, a generic version of Mucinex.

The company expects to initiate its full-scale over-the-counter launch of the store-brand equivalent to Mucinex in blister packaging to its retail and wholesale customers before the end of its current fiscal year in June.

Mucinex 600-mg tablets has estimated annual sales of approximately $135 million, according to Perrigo.

Pedinol Pharmacal, a podiatry-focused company that has been in business for more than 85 years, was acquired for an undisclosed amount that was said to be 1.5 times sales. Pedinol touted $18 million in revenue last year.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Legislation that requires transparency in the pharmacy audit processes conducted by pharmacy benefit managers is being enacted in Kentucky.

H.B. 349, which was signed by Kentucky state governor Steve Beshear last week and sponsored by Senate majority whip Tommy Thompson (D-Ky.), is designed to prohibit PBMs from seeking to recoup payments through pharmacy audits when there is no evidence of fraud.

The signing of the legislation was praised by the National Association of Chain Drug Stores.

CINCINNATI — Prasco Labs will market an authorized generic version of a drug used to treat diarrhea caused by a bacterial infection, the company said Wednesday.

Prasco announced that it had signed a deal with ViroPharma to market an authorized generic version of Vancocin (vancomycin hydrochloride) capsules in the 125-mg and 250-mg strengths. The drug is used to treat diarrhea related to Clostridium difficile infection.

DEERFIELD, Ill. — Takeda Pharmaceutical will acquire privately owned drug maker URL Pharma for $800 million, the companies said Wednesday.

Takeda announced that it would acquire Philadelphia-based URL through a U.S. subsidiary for the upfront payment plus future milestone payments. Takeda said it expected the acquisition to contribute "significantly" to its sales and profits starting in fiscal year 2013.

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Biotech manufacturer Amgen will acquire the private South San Francisco, Calif.-based drug developer Kai Pharmaceuticals for $315 million, the companies said Tuesday.

The deal includes the acquisition of KAI-4169, an experimental drug Kai is developing for secondary hyperparathyroidism in patients with chronic kidney disease who are on dialysis. Amgen has provided a loan to fund phase-3 clinical studies of the drug and will acquire rights to it worldwide, except for Japan.

PARSIPPANY, N.J. — The Food and Drug Administration has approved a generic version of a drug for diarrhea made by Watson, the company said Tuesday.

Watson announced the approval of vancomycin hydrochloride capsules in the 125-mg and 250-mg strengths. Vancomycin hydrochloride is used to treat diarrhea associated with Clostridium difficile and enterocolitis caused by Staphylococcus aureus, including methicillin-resistant strains.

NEW YORK — Pharmacies hoping to block the merger between pharmacy benefit managers Express Scripts and Medco Health Solutions got their day in court Tuesday, according to published reports.

Bloomberg reported that a hearing in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania began in Pittsburgh, with the National Association of Chain Drug Stores, the National Community Pharmacists Association and several independent pharmacies hoping to stop the $29.1 billion merger, which the Federal Trade Commission approved last week.
