NEW YORK — Walgreens' Duane Reade stores will be promoting its allergy remedies on days with high allergy indexes through Poncho, a text- and email-based weather app, according to a story published by Mashable on Tuesday. 

The offering will be Poncho's first step into monetizing its service, according to the report. 

The promotion, which was negotiated by OMD Ignition Factory according to the report, will run through June 7.

DUBLIN — Mallinckrodt Plc last week announced that the Food and Drug Administration approved Xartemis XR (oxycodone hydrochloride and acetaminophen) Extended-Release Tablets (CII), for the management of acute pain severe enough that it requires opioid treatment.

The drug also is indicated for patients for whom alternative treatments have shown to be ineffective. Xartemis XR, previously known as MNK-795, is the first and only extended-release oral combination of two clinically proven pain medications — oxycodone and acetaminophen.

A new study published in the March 18 journal Annals of Internal Medicine raises questions about current guidelines which generally restrict the consumption of saturated fats and encourage consumption of polyunsaturated fats, or fish oils, to prevent heart disease.

"These are interesting results that potentially stimulate new lines of scientific inquiry and encourage careful reappraisal of our current nutritional guidelines," suggested Rajiv Chowdhury, lead author of the research at the University of Cambridge.

ALAMEDA, Calif. — Abbott on Friday voluntarily recalled the FreeStyle Blood Glucose Meter and the FreeStyle Flash Blood Glucose Meter, neither of which have been in production since 2010. Other Abbott Diabetes Care meters are not affected by the recall. 

When used with the Abbott FreeStyle test strips, the FreeStyle Blood Glucose Meter and the FreeStyle Flash Blood Glucose Meter may produce mistakenly low blood glucose results. Abbott began notifying users on Feb. 19, 2014, immediately after the issue was discovered.

Along with Schneiderman and DeWine, the Attorneys General of 28 states and territories have written to the CEOs of WalMart, Walgreens, Rite Aid, Safeway and Kroger, asking them to remove all tobacco products from their shelves.

A recent audience-research study conducted by Nielsen found that among Cardinal Health's digital advertising network for retail pharmacies, called Pharmacy Health Network, half of viewers surveyed (49%) indicated that they felt encouraged to discuss a product or brand they had seen on Pharmacy Health Network with their pharmacist, and 48% indicated that after seeing ads on Pharmacy Health Network, they felt motivated to discuss those products or brands with their physicians.

The drug is a preventive treatment for deep vein thrombosis, which can lead to pulmonary embolism for patients who have had hip or knee replacement surgery.

Pierre Fabre Dermatologies announced that it received authorization from the Food and Drug Administration to market the pediatric drug Hemangeol (propranolol hydrochloride).

CASTRES, France and PARSIPPANY, N.J. — Pierre Fabre Dermatologies announced that it received authorization from the Food and Drug Administration to market the pediatric drug Hemangeol (propranolol hydrochloride).

It is the first and only approved treatment for “proliferating infantile hemangioma requiring systemic therapy," the company said. Infantile hemangioma is a vascular benign tumor that affects 3% to 10% of newborns.

The measure, proposed by Sen. Denise Grimsley, would also reduce from five to one the number of at-large posts for those with pharmacy licenses, the report states.
