New guidelines for using statins to treat high cholesterol and prevent cardiovascular disease are projected to result in 12.8 million more U.S. adults taking the drugs, according to a research team led by Duke Medicine scientists.

DURHAM, N.C. — New guidelines for using statins to treat high cholesterol and prevent cardiovascular disease are projected to result in 12.8 million more U.S. adults taking the drugs, according to a research team led by Duke Medicine scientists. Overall, of the 12.8 million additional U.S. adults recommended for statin use under the new guidelines, 10.4 million are people who would be prescribed the drugs for preventive care. Of those preventive users, 8.3 million would be people over the age of 60.

The trial is recruiting patients through more than 35 pharmacies and is expected to be completed by year-end.

A new study published in the January issue of Nutrition Reviews found that the probiotic L. reuteri NCIMB 30242 (Cardioviva) was found to significantly reduce LDL cholesterol and total cholesterol.

WOODCLIFF LAKE, N.J. — The Food and Drug Administration has approved a cholesterol drug made by Par Pharmaceutical Cos., the drug maker said Thursday.

Par announced the approval of generic fenofibric acid delayed-release capsules in the 45-mg and 135-mg strengths. The drug is used to reduce triglycerides and increase "good" high-density lipoprotein cholesterol.

The drug is a generic version of AbbVie's Trilipix, which has sales of about $554 million per year, according to IMS Health.

PITTSBURGH — Mylan has launched a generic drug for treating cholesterol problems, the company said Monday.

Mylan announced the launch of generic fenofibric acid delayed-release capsules in the 45-mg and 135-mg strengths.

The drug is a generic version of Abbott's Trilipix, designed for use in combination with statin drugs and diet to reduce triglycerides and increase high-density lipoprotein or "good" cholesterol.

Various versions of the drug had sales of about $553.6 million during the 12-month period that ended in March, according to IMS Health.

MADISON, N.J. — Most Americans have little understanding of the importance of managing fats known as triglycerides to maintain cardiovascular health, according to a new survey.

To conduct the survey, researchers from Fairleigh Dickinson University's PublicMind polled 600 adults aged 40 and older, finding that 54% of respondents didn't know if it was better to have high or low levels of triglycerides, and 45% of those diagnosed as having high cholesterol didn't know.

PITTSBURGH — Mylan has launched a generic drug for treating cholesterol, the company said Friday.

Mylan announced the launch of fenofibrate tablets in the 48 mg and 145 mg strengths. The drug is used to reduce so-called "bad" low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, total cholesterol, triglycerides and apolipoprotein B while increasing "good" high-density lipoprotein cholesterol in adults with primary hyperocholesterolemia or mixed dyslipidemia.

WHITEHOUSE STATION, N.J. — The Food and Drug Administration has approved a new drug made by Merck for treating high cholesterol, the drug maker said.

Merck announced the approval of Liptruzet (ezetimibe and atorvastatin). The drug combines two preexisting cholesterol drugs: ezetimibe, which Merck markets under the brand name Zetia, and atorvastatin, which Pfizer markets under the name Lipitor. Both drugs are available as generics, but because Liptruzet is a novel combination of them, it required FDA approval as a new drug.
