The link between high-fat diets and Type 2 diabetes has been known for a long time, but researchers at the University of North Carolina said they’ve found out how that link occurs.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The link between high-fat diets and Type 2 diabetes has been known for a long time, but researchers at the University of North Carolina said they’ve found out how that link occurs.

Led by UNC at Chapel Hill School of Medicine professor Jenny Ting, the team found that the key contributor to Type 2 diabetes is a diet high in saturated fat, but not unsaturated fat. Such diets cause immune cells to produce interleukin-1beta, an inflammatory protein.

SILVER SPRING, Md. — The Food and Drug Administration has seized supplies of a drug used to treat ear infections, under a program the agency started to remove unapproved drugs from the market.

The FDA announced the seizure of about $16.5 million worth of Auralgan otic solution made by Brooks, Ky.-based Integrated Commercialization Solutions. Chapel Hill, N.C.-based Deston Therapeutics manufactures the drug, while ICS warehouses it.

WomenCare Global has acquired two oral contraceptive brands from ICON, WomenCare said Monday.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — WomenCare Global has acquired two oral contraceptive brands from ICON, WomenCare said Monday.

The company acquired Roselle (levonorgestrel and ethinylestradiol) and Optinor (levonorgestrel). ICON developed both drugs under a partnership with an unnamed generic drug manufacturer.

“This partnership with WomenCare Global is a significant step forward in expanding access to quality-assured generic hormonal contraceptives at competitive prices,” ICON general manager David Smith said in a statement.
