FORT WASHINGTON, Pa. — McNeil Consumer Healthcare on Wednesday introduced a new form to the Zyrtec portfolio of allergy-relief products — an oral, dissolvable tablet. Delivering the same effective 24-hour relief, Zyrtec Dissolve Tabs are now available at all major retailers and pharmacies.

Zyrtec, the best-selling brand within the cold-allergy-sinus tablet category, generated $317.3 million for the 52 weeks ended Dec. 29, up 1.8% across total U.S. multi-outlet, according to IRI data.

Perrigo announced that it has received final approval from the Food and Drug Administration for its abbreviated new drug application for cetirizine hydrochloride oral solution USP, 1 mg/mL, bubble gum flavored, the store brand equivalent to Children's Zyrtec Allergy Syrup.

ALLEGAN, Mich. — Perrigo on Tuesday announced that it has received final approval from the Food and Drug Administration for its abbreviated new drug application for cetirizine hydrochloride oral solution USP, 1 mg/mL, bubble gum flavored, the store brand equivalent to Children's Zyrtec Allergy Syrup. Perrigo expects to begin shipments of the product during the upcoming cough/cold/flu season.

Now Sanofi is looking to virtually match those annual sales figures within the much more profitable nonprescription venue with the company’s successful switch from prescription to OTC this spring.

HAWTHORNE, N.Y. — The Food and Drug Administration has approved a generic over-the-counter treatment for allergies made by Taro Pharmaceutical Industries.

Taro announced Monday the approval of cetirizine hydrochloride oral solution.

The drug, a generic version of Johnson & Johnson’s children’s Zyrtec, is used to relieve symptoms of indoor and outdoor allergies and is available in a sugar-free bubblegum flavor.

IRVINGTON, N.Y. — Prestige Brands on Wednesday announced the launch of a new one-dose-per-day allergy medicine: PediaCare 24-Hour Allergy.

"We listened to what the moms were looking for: a safe and effective allergy product for their children, ages 2 years and up, that works, has only one dose per day and tastes good," stated Sherry Polevoy, PediaCare senior brand manager. "Parents don't have to worry about redosing during the day, it's dye-free and it's a flavor that kids love: grape."

Indian generic drug maker Dr. Reddy’s Labs has launched a generic treatment for seasonal allergies, the company said Tuesday.

HYDERABAD, India — Indian generic drug maker Dr. Reddy’s Labs has launched a generic treatment for seasonal allergies, the company said Tuesday.

Dr. Reddy’s announced the launch of levocetirizine tablets in the 5-mg strength. The drug is a generic version of UCB’s and Sanofi-Aventis’ Xyzal.

Levocetirizine had sales of about $238 million during the 12-month period ended in September 2010, according to IMS Health.

The Food and Drug Administration has granted market exclusivity for a generic version of a medication designed to treat indoor and outdoor allergies.

ALLEGAN, Mich. — The Food and Drug Administration has granted market exclusivity for a generic version of a medication designed to treat indoor and outdoor allergies.

Perrigo said Monday that its licensor and supplier Synthon received regulatory approval for levocetirizine tablets, a generic version of UCB/Sepracor's Xyzal, which is marketed in the United States by Sanofi-Aventis.

The levocetirizine tablet is the only approved generic product having a label containing all indications, Perrigo said.

Despite all the debate over the use of cough-cold medicines in children under the age of 12, sales of cough-cold medicines didn’t do too badly last year. For the 52 weeks ended Jan. 25, sales of all cough-cold remedies — including cough drops, cough syrups, cold-allergy liquids and cold-allergy tablets — were up 10.5%, totaling $4 billion across food, drug and mass outlets (minus Walmart) according to Information Resources Inc data. Of course, the lion’s share of that growth comes courtesy of the latest allergy reliever to make its way from prescription vials to over-the-counter aisles. Factoring out the sales impact of McNeil Consumer Healthcare’s Zyrtec, which generated in excess of $331 million across its Zyrtec syrup, Zyrtec tablet and Zyrtec-D tablet, the overall cough-cold category still grew by 1.4%. Considering that’s on a base of $3.6 billion, that represents incremental growth of almost $50 million.
