FDA highlights rare instance of burns associated with use of external analgesics

Most of the reported cases involved products containing higher concentrations of menthol and methyl salicylate (greater than 3% menthol or 10% methyl salicylate). Few of the cases involved capsaicin, the FDA reported.

FDA to review patch for HIV-related pain

A Food and Drug Administration expert panel will review a drug made by NeurogesX as a potential treatment for pain associated with HIV.

SAM MATEO, Calif. — A Food and Drug Administration expert panel will review a drug made by NeurogesX as a potential treatment for pain associated with HIV.

NeurogesX said Thursday that the FDA Anesthetic and Analgesic Drug Products Advisory Committee would meet on Feb. 9, 2012, to review the patch drug Qutenza (capsaicin) as a treatment for pain associated with HIV-associated peripheral neuropathy, or HIV-PN.

The drug currently is approved for treating pain associated with postherpetic neuralgia.

Nature's Health Connection's Australian Dream achieves record sales

Nature's Health Connection said its over-the-counter pain-relief cream has garnered record retail sales.

REDFORD, Mich. — Nature's Health Connection said its over-the-counter pain-relief cream has garnered record retail sales.

Sales for Australian Dream — a Food and Drug Administration-approved odorless, greaseless, dye-free and capsaicin-free cream — increased more than 145%, according to the company. Nature's Health Connection attributed the sales spike to a 30-second television commercial. 

Australian Dream is designed to treat minor aches and pains associated with osteo- and rheumatoid arthritis, as well as other muscle ailments.
