NEW YORK — A pharmacist in Canada has won a prestigious award from Pfizer Consumer Healthcare, according to published reports.

Nova Scotia's Truro Daily News reported that retired pharmacist Allan MacKinnon received the company's Bowl of Hygeia award during the weekend. Coworkers Kerry Mattatall and Marilyn MacLeod had put together the nomination package for MacKinnon, including 27 letters of support, citing the MacKinnons' support for their community.

Safeway on Monday announced that it has completed the sale of the net assets of Canada Safeway to Sobeys, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Empire Company.

PLEASANTON, Calif. — Safeway on Monday announced that it has completed the sale of the net assets of Canada Safeway to Sobeys, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Empire Co.

Proceeds from the transaction of $3.8 billion in cash after taxes and expenses and between $400 and $450 million in U.S. tax benefits related to the exit of the Chicago market will be used to pay down $2 billion of debt, with the majority of the remainder to be used to buy back stock. In addition, some of the proceeds may be used to invest in growth opportunities, Safeway reported.

A selloff of several store leases and the spinoff of two business segments are on the way for Sears Holdings as the company hopes to improve its third quarter 2013 performance, the retailer said Tuesday.

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. — A selloff of several store leases and the spinoff of two business segments are on the way for Sears Holdings as the company hopes to improve its third quarter 2013 performance, the retailer said Tuesday.

The company, which owns the Kmart mass-merchandise and Sears department store chains, said it would sell five store leases in Canada to Cadillac Fairview for about $383.5 million. That deal is expected to close in the next 10 business days.

MISSISSAUGA, Ontario — Target is on track to open all the stores it intends to in Canada, the mass merchandise retailer said Monday.

Target aid it would open its remaining 33 stores scheduled for 2013 in November, including the first stores in New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland provinces. Thirty-one stores will open on Nov. 13, and the remaining two will open on Nov. 22. The retailer had 124 Canadian store openings planned for the year and said it would announce additional store openings at a later date.

ST. As previously reported by Drug Store News, included in the sale are all brand assets, and the Johnson & Johnson manufacturing plant in Montreal. Energizer estimates that the acquisition will be modestly accretive in fiscal 2014.

Consumers in the United States are more likely than those in three other countries to say they prefer to receive generic drugs over branded drugs, according to a new study.

RHINEBECK, N.Y. — Consumers in the United States are more likely than those in three other countries to say they prefer to receive generic drugs over branded drugs, according to a new study.

The study, by Phoenix Marketing International, included 810 consumers from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and France. Among respondents, 37% of American consumers expressed a preference for generics when they were available, compared with 22% of those in France, 12% in the United Kingdom and 21% in Canada.

The Arthritis Society is donating more than C$4.5 million for arthritis research in Canada, the group said Wednesday.

TORONTO — The Arthritis Society is donating more than C$4.5 million for arthritis research in Canada, the group said Wednesday.

The organization, which is Canada's largest nongovernment funder of basic and applied arthritis researcher, said the funding will be used for established researchers and young investigators who are new to research. The amount is equivalent to US$4.36 million.

TORONTO — Shoppers Drug Mart announced on Thursday its shareholders voted in favor of the proposed acquisition by Loblaw Cos.

The transaction was approved by approximately 99.89% of the votes cast by all of the Shoppers Drug Mart shareholders eligible to vote.

As previously reported, Loblaw Cos. and Shoppers Drug Mart announced on July 15 a definitive agreement under which Loblaw will acquire Shoppers Drug Mart for C$12.4 billion in cash and stock.

Target said that all of the 68 stores it operates in Canada have been awarded Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED certification; most recently, 44 were certified. The company plans to have all 124 stores it is opening this year LEED-certified.

Expanding pharmacists' role in Canada could reduce the burden of chronic illness on patients and save the country's healthcare system between C$1.4 billion and C$1.9 billion (US$1.34 billion-$1.83 billion) over the next three years, according to a new report released by Arthritis Consumer Experts, the Arthritis Research Centre of Canada and Shoppers Drug Mart.

Canada's single-payer healthcare system is vastly different from that of the United States, not to mention differences between the two countries in terms of laws and regulations that govern pharmacy, but the lessons from the study apply equally to both.

With 68 stores already open across Canada, Target has released the timetable for the next batch of nearly two dozen, including the first stores in Quebec and Nova Scotia.

MISSISSAUGA, Ontario — With 68 stores already open across Canada, Target Corp. has released the timetable for the next batch of nearly two dozen, including the first stores in Quebec and Nova Scotia.

The mass merchandise retailer said it would open 14 stores on Sept. 17 and nine more on Oct. 18. A majority of the stores will feature a Starbucks, as well as a pharmacy. Most stores in Quebec will feature Brunet pharmacies, which will open in summer 2014.
