Supply issues earlier this year took many facings of GlaxoSmithKline's Alli nonprescription weight loss solution out of play, but no longer, as of earlier this summer. With Alli's absence, the hefty weight-loss solution fell behind Hydroxycut Advanced in number of units sold but still led all diet aids in sales with an 18.2% dollar share (to Hydroxycut Advanced's 9.6%).

Through this collaboration, the clinic’s patients can get prescriptions filled at no cost, and can receive face-to-face pharmacist counseling at three CVS/pharmacy locations in the greater Providence area.

The share repurchase authorization, which is effective immediately, permits the company to effect the repurchases from time to time through a combination of open market repurchases, privately negotiated transactions, accelerated share repurchase transactions, and/or other derivative transactions.

The company announced the availability of Qsymia (phentermine and topiramate) extended-release capsules, which it is formally introducing to medical professionals this week at the Obesity Society's annual scientific meeting in San Antonio.

Moriarty most recently served as general counsel at the Celgene, a biopharmaceutical company, where he was responsible for global legal strategy and served on the company's management committee. Prior to that, Moriarty was general counsel and corporate secretary at Medco Health Solutions.

The research, published in this week's issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, identified differences between consumer-directed advertisements for drugs when they are available by prescription only, compared with when they transition to OTC.

WOONSOCKET, R.I. —The CVS Caremark Charitable Trust and CVS/pharmacy have announced a donation of more than $20,000 in support of communities that have been affected by Hurricane Isaac.

The CVS Caremark Charitable Trust has donated $15,000 to the American Red Cross to support relief and recovery efforts. CVS/pharmacy also is providing nearly 1,000 first aid kits and nearly $5,000 in additional financial support to Red Cross shelters across Louisiana and Mississippi.

The findings, reported in a recent issue of Nature Medicine, were funded in part by CVS/pharmacy and the ALS Therapy Alliance, a Boston-based nonprofit.

The data — which have been compiled since January 2011 across approximately 200 kiosks currently in select Walmart, Safeway, Publix, CVS, Sam’s Club and Schnuck's Markets locations — also included the following results:

A former CVS executive has been appointed to a top position at a company that provides pharmacy services to the long-term care industry.

CHICAGO — A former CVS executive has been appointed to a top position at a company that provides pharmacy services to the long-term care industry.

Millennium Pharmacy Systems announced the appointment of A. James Newell as SVP operations. Newell started the new position Monday.

Most recently, Newell was the founder and CEO of the Newell Group and was COO of Quality Partners of Rhode Island, a Medicare quality-improvement organization. He previously served as director of pharmacy programs at CVS.
