MONTVALE, N.J. — Grocer A&P has named company COO Paul Hertz as president and CEO, effective immediately.

Hertz succeeds Sam Martin. In January, A&P confirmed Martin’s departure. Martin, a former OfficeMax executive joined A&P as CEO in July 2010, succeeding Ron Marshall, who left the company after serving less than six months at the helm.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — PharmaSmart International has signed a deal with Sav-Mor/Sav-On Pharmacies to supply its kiosks in the Michigan-based retail pharmacy network's stores, PharmaSmart said Friday.

PharmaSmart will install its blood pressure and pulse kiosks in the stores, and patients will be able to access their Blood Pressure Tracker personal health records at Sav-Mor's and Sav-On's websites.

CAMP HILL, Pa. — Rite Aid has appointed healthcare executive Myrtle Potter to its board of directors, the retail pharmacy chain said Tuesday.

Potter is currently CEO of Myrtle Potter & Co., a Silicon Valley-based consulting firm focused on life sciences and health care, as well as the head of consumer healthcare content company Myrtle Potter Media. She previous served as president of commercial operations and COO at Genentech and has worked at companies like Bristol-Myers Squibb and Merck.

OSAKA, Japan — Takeda Pharmaceutical Co., the largest drug maker in Japan, has hired the head of GlaxoSmithKline's vaccines division as its COO, Takeda said.

Christophe Weber was elected at the drug maker's board of directors meeting to become COO and candidate as the next CEO. Current president and CEO Yasuchika Hasegawa is expected to be named chairman and CEO.

Weber is currently president and general manager of GSK Vaccines, CEO of GSK Biologicals in Belgium and a member of GSK's global corporate executive team.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Health kiosk maker PharmaSmart International and a drug chain that operates stores in Minnesota and Iowa have integrated PharmaSmart's technology into the chain's software system.

PharmaSmart and Astrup Drug said Friday that the integration of PharmaSmart's interoperable biometric screening technology with Astrup's Rx30 system allows timely patient interventions, counseling sessions and increases medication therapy management case recruitment for patients with hypertension, ultimately improving outcomes.

Rite Aid reported its third consecutive profitable quarter Thursday, with profits of nearly $90 million, following the introduction of the largest expansion of its Wellness+ loyalty card program, dubbed Wellness65+, and days before the promotion of COO Ken Martindale to president of the company.

The 4,615-store drug chain has been on a roll lately, continuing to benefit from the switch from branded to generic drugs and the retention of last year's dispute between Walgreens and Express Scripts.

Rite Aid announced Wellness65+, which makes customers age 65 years and older who enroll automatically eligible for an expanded pharmacist consultation, during which they can bring in current medications for a review by the pharmacist and discuss immunization needs.

Rite Aid announced Wednesday that it has converted nearly all its stores in the Buffalo, N.Y., area to the Wellness store format, breaking the news with an event in the nearby village of Williamsville that included president, chairman and CEO John Standley, COO Ken Martindale and fitness expert Denise Austin.

Just as writers find their voices, Rite Aid has paved its road with wellness. Evidence of that was clear when it announced its latest last month, raking in a $123.1 million profit for the fourth quarter and a $118.1 million profit for the fiscal year, its first profitable year since 2007.
