Net sales at 99 Cents Only Stores increased 8.8% in third quarter 2013, the company said.

CITY OF COMMERCE, Calif. — Net sales at 99 Cents Only Stores increased 8.8% in third quarter 2013, the company said.

The dollar-store chain announced sales of $439.5 million, a $35.6 million increase over third quarter 2012, while comps increased 4.3%. For the first three quarters of fiscal year 2013, sales were $1.23 billion, an 8.7% increase over the same period last year, while comps increased 4.3%. Profit for the quarter was $12.7 million, compared with $22.2 million at the end of third quarter 2012.

CITY OF COMMERCE, Calif. — 99¢ Only Stores last week announced that Richard Anicetti has assumed the role of interim CEO. In addition, Michael Fung will join the company as interim chief administrative officer overseeing finance, information technology, real estate and various administrative functions of the company. 

In connection with the foregoing changes, the original family management team Eric Schiffer, Jeff Gold and Howard Gold are no longer employed by the company.

CITY OF COMMERCE, Calif. — 99 Cents Only announced its official search for retail property on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, Calif.

The iconic street may be best known as a shopping district that houses designer label and haute couture fashion, but the extreme value retailer said it will be a strategic fit as it already has 222 stores in California.

CITY OF COMMERCE, Calif. — 99 Cents Only Stores is opening a new store in Sanger, Calif.

The new Sanger store, which officially opens its doors Sept. 20, is located at 2680 Jensen Ave. at the corner of Bethel Ave. The new store is approximately 19,000 sq. ft. and will feature a perishable food department, including produce, dairy and frozen foods.

99 Cents Only currently operates 302 extreme value retail stores, consisting of 221 stores in California, 37 in Texas, 29 in Arizona and 15 in Nevada.

99 Cents Only Stores is celebrating its 30th anniversary.

CITY OF COMMERCE, Calif. — 99 Cents Only Stores is celebrating its 30th anniversary.

Since its founding in 1982, the chain has expanded to 302 extreme value stores in four states consisting of 220 stores in California, 37 in Texas, 29 in Arizona, and 15 in Nevada. As part of the celebration, the company is converting 40 semi-trucks from diesel to clean-burning compressed natural gas. Additionally, the company is offering a free reusable shopping bag to customers who visit the store this weekend and purchase at least $9.99 worth of merchandise.

CITY OF COMMERCE, Calif. — 99 Cents Only is opening its first Reno, Nev., store in July.

The company said the new store, which will open July 12, is 17,000 sq. ft. and will feature a large perishable food department, including produce, dairy and frozen foods.

99 Cents Only currently operates 300 retail stores, including 220 stores in California, 37 in Texas, 29 in Arizona and 14 in Nevada.

Even with an extra week in this year's reporting period, 99 Cents Only Stores reported a total sales increase for it fiscal fourth quarter.

CITY OF COMMERCE, Calif. — Even with an extra week in this year's reporting period, 99 Cents Only Stores reported a total sales increase for it fiscal fourth quarter. The company reported total sales of $378.5 million for the 14-week fourth quarter of fiscal 2011 ended April 2, 2011, compared with $339.3 million for the 13-week fourth quarter in the prior fiscal year.

The company reported a same-store sales increase of 0.5% for the quarter. Excluding Texas operations, comps were up 0.7%.

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. — Sears Holdings' SVP procurement and finance has been promoted.

Deidra Cheeks Merriwether now holds the title of SVP and president of retail services, succeeding James Haworth. In this role, Merriwether, who joined the corporation in 2001, will be responsible for the oversight and leadership of retail services for the broadline retailer's Kmart and Sears stores.

Merriwether currently serves as a member of Sears Canada's board of directors and is the executive sponsor of the company's African-American Associate Network.

NOVATO, Calif. — Sears has partnered with Sonic Solutions to bring an online movie download service to Sears and Kmart customers. The new Alphaline Entertainment service, available at Alphaline.roxionow.com, enables the retailers’ customers to download new movies the same day they are released on DVD/Blu-ray.

Sonic is working with Sears on a multiphase rollout that includes making the service available from a broad range of connected devices and ensuring compatibility with studio-supported digital programs.

Walmart stores have regained a familiar feeling this holiday season, and if senior executives are right, the increased promotional intensity will halt six consecutive quarters of declining same-store sales and put the company on the right track for 2011. The most obvious change is the return of branded feature displays and four-sided fixtures to the main aisles of Walmart’s 3,600 U.S. supercenters and discount stores. As Walmart has moved in a new and familiar direction under a different senior leadership team and a restructured merchandising organization focused on the familiar brand promise of everyday low prices, it has sought to retain the best elements of its Project Impact strategy while modifying those that negatively affected sales, the most notable of which was the elimination of feature displays.
