DSN sat down with Scott Melville, CHPA president and CEO, to discuss the Consumer Healthcare Products Association 2013 Annual Executive Conference and how the conference will focus on "consumer centricity," in this exclusive podcast. In addition, senior-level executives attending the sold-out conference will learn how CHPA is extolling that value on Capitol Hill. "OTCs are demonstrating their value everyday because consumers are purchasing them with their own dollars," Melville said. "The challenge has been for policy-makers to understand the value that OTC medicines bring." But that may change this year, Melville said, as CHPA continues to lobby around that OTC value quotient.

The association is asking the Administration to take a further step and support restoring over-the-counter medicines’ eligibility under tax-preferred accounts including FSAs and health savings accounts.

Pennsylvania last month became the 29th state to employ the National Precursor Log Exchange in the fight against the diversion of products containing pseudoephedrine into methamphetamine. State No. 30, Delaware, is expected to sign real-time stop sale technology into law this summer.

"NPLEx gives retailers the power to block these illegal purchases at the register before they happen, giving communities and Pennsylvania law enforcement a new and critical tool in stopping the illegal sale of these medicines to criminals," noted Scott Melville, CHPA president and CEO.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse last week released the 2012 Monitoring the Future survey, finding that 5.6% of high school seniors, 3% of eighth graders and 4.7% of tenth graders abused over-the-counter cough and cold medicines containing dextromethorphan, bringing the overall average to under 5%.

Abuse of DXM products was reported to be 3% among eighth graders and 4.7% among tenth graders, bringing the overall average to under 5%.
