Rite Aid posted a 0.4% increase in same-store sales for the month of August, the retail pharmacy operator said Wednesday.

CAMP HILL, Pa. — Rite Aid posted a 0.4% increase in same-store sales for the month of August, the retail pharmacy operator said Wednesday.

The increase included a 2.4% increase in front-end comps and a 0.6% decrease in pharmacy comps. Total store sales for the five-week period that ended Saturday were roughly $2.41 billion, a 0.4% decrease from last year's $2.414 billion. Same-store prescription count increased by 4.5%.

CAMP HILL, Pa. — Members of Rite Aid's loyalty card program will have special reward points added to their cards automatically starting next month, the retail pharmacy chain said Thursday.

Beginning Sept. 2, Wellness+ members will have +UPs loaded to their cards automatically. +UPs are special rewards earned when certain items or groups of items are purchased and can be used like cash toward future purchases. Rite Aid COO Ken Martindale said the national rollout of the Load2Card feature for +UPs would follow a seven-month pilot in four cities.

CAMP HILL, Pa. — A delivery truck driver for Rite Aid has won the retail pharmacy chain's annual driving competition, the company said.

Rite Aid announced Monday that Paul Matyseck of Lancaster, Calif., a Rite Aid driver for nine years, won the Rite Aid Driver Skills Challenge in Perryman, Md. Matyseck competed against 11 other Rite Aid drivers in the competition, which began in 2004.

Everybody loves a comeback story, and it looks as though the pharmacy retail industry has one of its own in the making as Rite Aid’s latest earnings report showed another strong quarter for the Camp Hill, Pa.-based chain, which has been steadily growing its sales and narrowing its losses for several quarters already.

CARLISLE, Pa. — A Giant-Carlisle store in Pennsylvania will sponsor an event to teach kids about healthy eating.

Giant Food Stores, the Ahold USA-owned chain based in Carlisle, Pa., said it would sponsor the "Kid Healthy Ideas Nutrition Express" on Friday morning and again on the morning of Aug. 22 at a store in Camp Hill, Pa.

An in-store nutritionist will teach kids how to make snack mix, breakfasts and healthy desserts, as well as teach them about the dangers of sugary drinks.

Rite Aid said it would use the Rites — a fictional, digital family comprising Procrastinating Papa Rite, Deal Digger Mama Rite, Over-the-Top Olivia Rite, Scrooge Sally Rite, and Prepare and Preppy Patrick Rite — to promote deals across its Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest pages.

The 1% decrease in overall comps included a 1.6% decrease in pharmacy same-store sales — including a negative effect of 672 basis points from new generic introductions — and a 0.3% increase in front-end same-store sales. Prescription count at comparable stores increased 2.9%.

The results for the five weeks ended June 2 included a 1.3% increase in front-end comps and a 1% increase in pharmacy sales over May 2011. Same-store prescription count increased 2.6%. Total drug store sales for the period increased 0.3% to nearly $2.5 billion, compared with $2.45 billion in May 2011.

CAMP HILL, Pa. — Retail pharmacy chain Rite Aid is promoting healthy skin care as part of a partnership with the Skin Cancer Foundation, the retailer said Wednesday.

The new campaign offers free skin care guides in stores and online, expert advice from pharmacists and continued support for the fifth annual Road to Healthy Skin Tour, also offered under a collaboration with the foundation. The tour, launched in March, is visiting more than 50 Rite Aid stores around the country and offering free, full-body skin cancer screenings.

Rite Aid announced that its board of directors had elected Standley to replace current chairman Mary Sammons, effective June 21. Sammons has served as chairman since June 2007 and plans to step down at the company's annual stockholder meeting.

Under the new regulations adopted by the state pharmacy, medicine and osteopathy boards, pharmacists now can vaccinate adult patients against hepatitis A, hepatitis B, tetanus, diphtheria, whooping cough, shingles, flu and pneumonia.

CAMP HILL, Pa. — Rite Aid has closed an offering of new debt from which it plans to generate funding for a buyback of older debt, the retailer said Tuesday.

Rite Aid announced the closing of its offering of $421 million in senior notes with a 9.25% interest rate and due in 2020. The company plans to use money from the offering to buy back 9.375% senior notes due 2015. As of Monday night, $296.3 million worth of the old notes had been put up for sale.

Rumors surfaced last week that Margeson, who managed the pain care, gastrointestinal, smoking-cessation and upper-respiratory categories for the Camp Hill, Pa.-based retail pharmacy chain, had resigned.

"We thank him for his contributions to the company," Rite Aid spokeswoman Ashley Flower told Drug Store News, adding that the company intends to fill the position.

The boost included a 2.7% increase in front-end comps and a 3% increase in pharmacy comps, as well as a 3.8% increase in script count. Total drug store sales for the period, which ended Saturday, were nearly $2 billion, a 2.5% increase over the $1.95 billion reported in April 2011.
