The research could help explain why some clinical studies have been unable to see a benefit of vitamin A on cancer: the vitamin doesn’t appear to change the course of full-blown cancer, only pre-cancerous cells, and only works at a very narrow dose.

MUMBAI and PITTSBURGH — Mylan on Monday announced that its subsidiary, Mylan Pharmaceuticals Private Limited, has launched the world's first trastuzumab biosimilar in India. The product — which will be marketed by Mylan as Hertraz — is used for the treatment of HER2-positive metastatic breast cancer. Hertraz is a biosimilar to Roche's Herceptin and is available in two strengths:  440mg and 150mg.

Kroger on Tuesday announced it has committed $3 million in donations for local breast cancer initiatives across the country to support National Breast Cancer Awareness month in October.

CINCINNATI — Kroger on Tuesday announced it has committed $3 million in donations for local breast cancer initiatives across the country to support National Breast Cancer Awareness month in October. 

This will be the seventh year since Kroger began the Giving Hope a Hand initiative. By the end of 2013, Kroger will have donated more than $24 million to support breast cancer research, education and services since 2006, the grocer reported.

The FDA announced the approval of Abraxane (paclitaxel protein-bound particles for injectable suspension, albumin-bound) for patients with late-stage forms of the disease. The drug is a chemotherapy treatment already approved for treating breast and lung cancers.

Breast-feeding rates have continued to rise over the past decade, according to data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

ATLANTA — Breast-feeding rates have continued to rise over the past decade, according to data released Wednesday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The percent of babies breast-feeding at six months increased from 35% in 2000 to 49% in 2010. The percent of babies breast-feeding at 12 months also increased from 16% to 27% during that same time period. 

The data show that babies who started breast-feeding increased from 71% in 2000 to 77% in 2010.

The FDA announced the approval of Genentech's Kadcyla (ado-trastuzumab emtansine) for HER2-positive breast cancer that has spread to other parts of the body. HER2 is a protein involved in the growth of normal cells but found in increased amounts in some kinds of cancer cells, which contributes to cancer cell growth and survival. Genentech is the U.S. subsidiary of Swiss drug maker Roche.
