Rising commodity costs and brutal competition have been squeezing profits from the ready-to-eat cereal category. Dollar sales for the 52-week period ended Dec. 26, 2010, were down 3%, according to SymphonyIRI Group. Sue Viamari, editor of SymphonyIRI’s Times and Trends, said the category has been in decline during the past several quarters, and there was a 0.7% decline in price per volume during the same period.

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — A Kellogg's cereal that has had success in the United Kingdom is making its way across the Atlantic to U.S. consumers.

Kellogg's U.S. launch of Crunchy Nut cereal is being supported by the company's latest campaign, "It's Morning Somewhere." The campaign will include television, online and in-store advertising. One of the biggest showcases will be a consumer event featuring a large cuckoo clock to celebrate all time zones, the company said.

PARSIPPANY, N.J. — Post Foods is inviting consumers to “join the whole-grain resolution” with its latest campaign.

The cereal company said it is bringing an interactive tractor display to several major cities, including New York, Los Angeles, Tampa, San Diego and Orlando throughout January and February. The goal: to teach consumers why ingredients in such cereals as Post Shredded Wheat, Grape-Nuts and Post Raisin Bran give you an advantage in the morning.

PARSIPPANY, N.J. — Post Foods has announced that as of January 2011, the company’s Fruity and Cocoa Pebbles cereal will have a lower sugar content — 9 g per serving — in an effort to address the rise in nutritional concerns among Americans, the company noted last week.

The rice-based cereal brands also will be certified as gluten free — a relatively unique distinction in the cereal category, according to Post Foods.
