TORONTO — Salon Selectives, a division of CLT International, has acquired the trademark rights for Daily Defense hair care products.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

"We are extremely excited about the addition of this popular brand to our portfolio of personal and hair care products," Salon Selectives principal Jack Wilkinson said. "The addition of Daily Defense provides us with two world-class brands that we can offer at affordable prices to value-conscious women around the world."

The new packaging will target baby boomers on a low-dose aspirin regimen, as recommended by doctors, to help lower the risk of heart attack and stroke. The new packaging copy calls out the need for the consumer to engage in an “Aspirin Regimen.”

BRIDGEWATER, N.J. — Valeant Pharmaceuticals has announced the launch of the "Change Your Skin, Change Your Life" campaign, in which its Kinerase brand will make three charitable donations in 2011.

Each donation, which will be made in June, September and December, will be decided upon by consumer suggestions on the Kinerase Facebook page. Participants will submit their favorite charities and then vote on the ones they like. The charity with the most votes will be the beneficiary of Kinerase's donation.

Nivea's marketing budget for 2011 is around 1 billion Euros (about $1.5 billion), and roughly 70% of that is being invested in the new campaign. Nivea hopes that the investment will strengthen the brand and stabilize its position as the No. 1 skin care brand.

CINCINNATI — Procter & Gamble has announced a new advertising campaign for its Pantene hair care brand, featuring actresses Eva Mendes and Naomi Watts.

Beginning in July, both women will appear in all elements of the brand's marketing campaign, including TV and print advertising, in-store displays, iMedia and public relations campaigns.

Mendes will support the Breakage to Strength collection, while Watts will support the Flat to Volume collection.

CINCINNATI — Procter & Gamble’s Pantene hair care brand has started producing its new shampoo and conditioner bottles made primarily from plant-based plastic.

This material — a first for the hair care industry — is made from sugar cane and will be featured on the Pantene Pro-V Nature Fusion collection. The new bottles initially will be launching in Western Europe with expansion plans to the rest of the world over the next two years.

NEW YORK — Target once again has taken the top spot as the retailer with the strongest consumer brand equity, according to the latest Harris poll.

This marked the second consecutive year Target has led the way in the "value retail" category, with an increasing gap noted between the company and runner-up Walmart, according to the "2011 Harris Poll EquiTrend" study. Target led the way with a ranking of 74.1, while Walmart had a ranking of 70.8. The industry average in the value retail category was 67.3.

In a new report released by Rabobank's Food and Agribusiness Research division, author Sebastiaan Schreijen noted that national brands and smaller, secondary brands (referred to as "A" and "B" brands, respectively) will prompt an intense price competition and therefore will cause the private-label market to become chock-full of higher-quality "B"-brand products at lower prices.
