The Food and Drug Administration approved Tivicay (dolutegravir), a new drug to treat HIV-1 infection that is manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline.

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Monday approved Tivicay (dolutegravir), a new drug to treat HIV-1 infection that is manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline.

Tivicay is an integrase strand transfer inhibitor that interferes with one of the enzymes necessary for HIV to multiply. It is a pill taken daily in combination with other antiretroviral drugs.

SAN FRANCISCO — Anti-aging skin care brand Algenist has announced that its new product, Advanced Anti-Aging Repairing Oil, is now available internationally on store shelves at Sephora.

According to the company, the anti-aging serum is the first commercial product to feature Solazyme’s Microalgae Oil. The patent-pending advanced Microalgae Oil was developed by Solazyme, a renewable oil and bioproducts company. In addition to Sephora and Sephora inside jcpenney, the new product can be found at Space NK, QVC, Sephora.com and Algenist.com.

With the launch of Procter & Gamble's ZzzQuil, a relatively quiet sleep category has exploded with energy this year. A lot of that has to do with the $121.1 million in sales that ZzzQuil — both tablet and liquid formulations — has generated this year.

But that doesn't explain everything. The entire category is up nearly $145 million. For the 52 weeks ended June 16 across total U.S. multi-outlets, IRI measured a 707.4% lift in sleep liquid sales to $89.7 million. The slightly larger category of sleep tablets realized a 29.8% lift in sales to $294.2 million.

The coming cough-cold season is difficult to project. On one hand, this year's cough-cold incidence will be going against very strong illness rate numbers from last year. In addition, with both McNeil Consumer and Novartis Consumer supporting the relaunch of a number of cough-cold products, the category is expected to be very promotional this season, a factor that could squeeze margins.

DSN estimates that annualized sales of cold and allergy products through mid-June were up 7.9%, representing almost $570 million in incremental dollars.

PARSIPPANY, N.J. — Actavis has acquired global rights to a drug made by a Spanish company for fungal infections of the vagina, the companies said Tuesday.

Actavis and Palau Pharma announced that Actavis Specialty Brands had acquired right's to albaconazole, an orally administered antifungal for vulvo-vaginal candidiasis, onychomycosis and others. The drug, which Palau discovered, is currently in phase-2 clinical trials, and Actavis foresees a potential U.S. commercial launch of the drug in 2017.

PHILADELPHIA — The Food and Drug Administration has approved for shipment the latest version of a GlaxoSmithKline flu vaccine, the drug maker said Monday.

The FDA approved the Fluarix Quadrivalent (influenza virus vaccine) for the 2013-2014 season for shipment to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention distribution centers and healthcare providers. GSK said this would be the first season in which vaccines protecting against more than three strains will be available.

K-V Pharmaceutical Co. subsidiary Ther-Rx Corp. announced the availability of Clindesse (clindamycin phosphate), saying wholesalers have ordered and received it and are distributing it to retail pharmacies. The drug is used to treat bacterial vaginosis in women who are not pregnant. BV results from an overgrowth of several bacterial species and is the most common vaginal infection in women of childbearing age.

According to the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, HPV vaccination coverage for girls did not increase over last year. The survey included vaccination records of about 19,000 teenagers.
