BURLINGTON, Mass. The drug market for ulcerative colitis treatments will see modest growth through 2019, according to a new report by Decision Resources.

The research and advisory firm said that the UC drug market will see growth of $800 million, driven by the uptake of Abbott and Eisai's Humira, Centocor Ortho Biotech/Merck/Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma/Janssen's Simponi and Millennium's vedolizumab in the United States, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, United Kingdom and Japan.

WOODCLIFF LAKE, N.J. The Food and Drug Administration has approved a generic treatment for cough and upper respiratory symptoms resulting from colds and allergies made by Par Pharmaceutical and Tris Pharma, Par said Tuesday.

The FDA approved hydrocodone polistirex and chlorpheniramine polistirex extended-release oral suspension. The drug is a generic version of UCB’s Tussionex, which has annual sales of around $226 million, according to IMS Health.

ROCKVILLE, Md. Human Genome Sciences and Novartis have decided not to further develop an investigative biologic treatment for hepatitis C following the Food and Drug Administration’s decision to decline its approval, HGS said Tuesday.

 

HGS said it received a complete response letter from the FDA concerning the drug Zalbin (albinterferon alfa-2b). The FDA delivers a complete response letter to indicate that it has finished reviewing an application, but questions remain that preclude final approval.

NEW YORK French drug maker Sanofi-Aventis has launched a hostile takeover bid to take over Cambridge, Mass.-based biotech company Genzyme, according to published reports.

 

The Associated Press reported Monday that Sanofi would try to acquire the company for $18.5 billion, or $69 per share. Genzyme previously had rejected Sanofi’s friendly offer for the same amount.

JERUSALEM The Food and Drug Administration declined to approve a Teva biosimilar, the generic drug maker said Thursday.

 

Teva said it received a complete response letter from the FDA concerning Neutroval (filgrastim), for neutropenia in patients receiving chemotherapy for cancer. The FDA issues complete response letters when it needs additional information before it can approve a drug.

 

 

Neutroval is a biosimilar of Amgen’s Neupogen and is marketed in Europe under the name TevaGrastim.

BURLINGTON, Mass. The drug market for Crohn's disease treatments will see moderate growth over the next decade, Decision Resources reported Wednesday.

The research firm projected that the market will increase a little more than 31%, from $3.2 billion in 2009 to $4.2 billion in 2019, in the United States, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom and Japan. Decision Resources said the the modest growth rate masks such market changes as new and emerging biologics, as well as generic competition.

The report, announced Tuesday, found that the market for drugs to treat high blood pressure would decline from 2009’s $26 billion to $23 billion by 2019 in the United States, United Kingdom, France, Italy, Spain and Japan.

CAMP HILL, Pa. One week after Walgreens announced that it was offering pertussis immunizations at its California locations, Rite Aid has followed suit.

Rite Aid said Monday that pharmacists at more than 500 Rite Aid stores across the state will offer pertussis, or whooping cough, vaccinations to individuals ages 7 years and older. The disease already has claimed the lives of nine infants in the state and is on pace to become the worst epidemic the state has seen in 50 years.
