WOONSOCKET, R.I. — CVS/pharmacy and MinuteClinic are offering a flu shot voucher program in August as part of CVS/pharmacy's Project Health free screening events.

Qualifying patients who attend a "Flu Voucher Fridays" Project Health event, complete the screenings and identify themselves as not having health insurance will receive a voucher redeemable for a flu shot at any CVS/pharmacy or MinuteClinic location this flu season. The flu shot vouchers are being offered as part of National Immunization Awareness Month.

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. — Supervalu pharmacies are offering the pertussis (Tdap) vaccine booster at the majority of its nearly 800 pharmacies, the company announced Tuesday.

“We have seen a tremendous increase in the number of cases of whooping cough throughout the country,” stated Chris Dimos, president of Supervalu Pharmacies. “It is strongly recommended from many state health department agencies that all teenagers and adults who have not had the Tdap vaccine get immunized to prevent the spread of this very contagious disease.”

Janssen Biotech and Janssen Biologics B.V. announced the submission of a supplemental regulatory application to the Food and Drug Administration for Simponi (golimumab) for treatment of moderately to severely active ulcerative colitis, an inflammatory bowel disease that affects about 700,000 people in the United States. The drug already is approved for rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis.

CINCINNATI — Days after its acquisition of Coagulife, specialty pharmacy provider BioRx has received limited distribution rights to a treatment for a bleeding disorder described as one of the rarest in the world.

The company, which specializes in treating bleeding disorders, said Wednesday that it had received the rights for Corifact (factor XIII concentrate [human]), a treatment made by CSL Behring for congenital Factor XIII deficiency. The drug received approval from the Food and Drug Administration in February 2011.

BioRx, based in Cincinnati and specializing in such bleeding disorders as hemophilia, announced the purchase of Savage, Minn.-based Coagulife, which provides similar services.

The FDA announced the approval of the OraQuick In-Home HIV Test, calling it the first OTC, self-administered HIV test kit that detects the presence of antibodies to HIV, including the HIV-1 and HIV-2 strains.

PITTSBURGH — Mylan has launched generic versions of two drugs to treat bipolar disorder and allergies, the company said Tuesday.

Mylan announced the launch of lithium carbonate extended-release tablets in the 300-mg strength. The drug is a generic version of Noven Therapeutics' Lithobid, various versions of which had sales of about $21 million during the 12-month period ended in March, according to IMS Health.
