Anheuser-Busch on Tuesday announced the return of Budweiser's Project 12 — the brewmaster platform that introduced Budweiser Black Crown — with three new beers, beginning Oct. 28.

ST. LOUIS — Anheuser-Busch on Tuesday announced the return of Budweiser's Project 12 — the brewmaster platform that introduced Budweiser Black Crown — with three new beers, beginning Oct. 28.

For Project 12, Budweiser's team of brewmasters develop new beer recipes featuring the signature yeast first used by Adolphus Busch in 1876. The three small-batch Budweisers named for the ZIP code where the beer is brewed include:

Craft brewers are the star of the show in the latest issue of Costco Wholesale Corp.'s member magazine.

ISSAQUAH, Wash. — Craft brewers are the star of the show in the latest issue of Costco Wholesale's member magazine.

For the cover story of the September issue of Costco Connection, the club retailer solicited stories from members who had turned brewing as a hobby into businesses, or dreamed of doing so, receiving more than 500 responses.

Breweries profiled include Two Brothers Brewing Co. of Warrenville, Ill.; Copper Kettle Brewing Co, of Denver; Mac & Jack's Brewery of Redmond, Wash.; and Maui Brewing Co. of Lahaina, Hawaii.

Craft beers, particularly India Pale Ales and seasonals, continue to drive category growth in the beer category.

Craft beers, particularly India Pale Ales and seasonals, continue to drive category growth in the beer category. A number of imported labels have seen an uptick in sales. Brands with a strong Hispanic appeal, such as Modelo Especial, Victoria and Corona, consistently have had strong sales. Stella Artois also has been a strong performer.

Meanwhile, major breweries are attempting to breathe life back into traditional brands with new introductions aimed at younger consumers.

Craft beers — particularly seasonals — have provided much-needed innovation to the beer category, providing the category with double-digit sales increases for the last several years. Craft brews’ sales were up 16.2% for the 52 weeks ended in early October 2011, according to the Brewers Association. While craft brews represent 4.9% of total beer category volume, the segments accounts for 7.6% of retail dollar volume.

The lineup includes ales that fit each season of the year:

  • Newcastle Summer Ale is a golden beer that offers a subtle citrus hop aroma and a clean, refreshing flavor with a dry finish;

  • Newcastle Werewolf, naturally blood-red in color, is a distinct-tasting fall ale that produces a combination of sweet berry overtones and a sudden bite of bitterness;

BOSTON — Samuel Adams is sprucing up its Imperial lineup of beers with a new scotch-style ale.

New Samuel Adams Wee Heavy is inspired by the Scottish tradition of naming ales for their strength. The new ale weighs in at 10% alcohol by volume, twice that of the average beer. Samuel Adams suggests that the beer be enjoyed like a fine wine.

NEW YORK — "The Colbert Report" on Wednesday hosted a segment “Tip of the Hat; Wag of the Finger” that featured — and poked a little fun at — Walgreens’ private-label beer Big Flats 1901.

The American lager is so named as an homage to the flat boats that traveled rivers delivering goods to early settlers.

Walgreens' 50-cents-per-can beer is brewed by Genesee Brewery, which has been brewing Genesee beer in Rochester, N.Y., since 1878.

The inhabitants of Brooklyn's Williamsburg neighborhood tend to like their independent, mom-and-pop stores. So it's no surprise that the recent opening of a Duane Reade store on Bedford Avenue caused some controversy among residents. But then again, Duane Reade is no ordinary drug store chain, and it showed its independent spirit with something far from controversial: beer.
