Men are putting their best face forward and are catching up to women by taking on a skin care regimen that goes beyond a hasty shave.

As previously reported by Drug Store News, the NPD Group released in 2012 the results on the men's skin care market and found that men's skin care sales in the prestige market increased 6% between January and July 2012, compared with the same time in 2011, generating $45.5 million. In addition, NPD found that at least 7-out-of-10 men are buying facial skin care products for themselves.

SUPPLIER NEWS — Not Your Mother’s hair care is further expanding its distribution by adding Ricky’s NYC to its retail mix.


As of mid-November, Ricky’s NYC had brought in Not Your Mother’s full line of hair care in all its retail stores, as well as its online store. There are more than 11,500 retail locations in the United States currently selling Not Your Mother’s.

NEW YORK — The Estée Lauder Cos. on Thursday stated that Jane Lauder and Peter Lichtenthal will each assume additional responsibilities as part of the company’s previously announced strategic organizational redesign.

Lauder, global president and GM of the Origins and Ojon brands, will now add Darphin to her brand leadership responsibilities. Lauder will continue to report to Lynne Greene, who takes on her new role as group president of Clinique, Origins, Ojon, Aveda and Darphin on Jan. 1. Greene will remain president of the Clinique brand.

L’Oréal has signed an agreement with Castanea Partners to acquire the fashion-forward, edgy beauty brand Urban Decay.

NEWTON, Mass. — L’Oréal has signed an agreement with Castanea Partners to acquire the fashion-forward, edgy beauty brand Urban Decay.

Terms of the deal, which is expected to close by the end of the year, were not disclosed. In the fiscal year ended in June 2012, Urban Decay, which is sold in such beauty retailers as Ulta and Sephora, recorded net sales of $130 million.

In the United States, Urban Decay will report to Carol Hamilton, president of L'Oréal Luxe USA.

A study of 900 women by Siempre Mujer magazine, a Spanish-language publication that covers beauty, fashion and lifestyles for Latinas, found that Latinas prefer details in beauty products, follow a multipronged beauty regimen and tend to outspend women in the general population when it comes to beauty, with more than 52% spending $25 or more per visit. In other words, Latinas represent a significant opportunity for retailers and beauty manufacturers.

Giving the growth of the Hispanic market and the rising buying power, it is important that retailers and manufacturers understand how to effectively connect with this beauty shopper.

According to reports, the cause of death was a heart attack.

The new Osiao brand will debut exclusively in Hong Kong with Lane Crawford at the Canton Road and Times Square locations, starting in mid-October. According to SymphonyIRI Group, sales of hair styling gel/mousse slipped about 1.5% during the 12 weeks ended July 8 at food, drug and mass (excluding Walmart). During the same period, sales of women’s hair coloring dropped 4.6%, and hair relaxer kits were 
down 12.5%. The double-digit drop in hair relaxer kits comes as little surprise as many ethnic beauty shoppers are choosing to 
go natural.

The newest products join Panasonic's current beauty product portfolio, which includes facial steamers, pore cleansers and bikini trimmers.

Revlon, which recently added the Pure Ice brand to its portfolio, posted a 4.6% boost in U.S. net sales during the second quarter, due in large part to higher sales of Revlon color cosmetics.

NEW YORK — Revlon, which recently added the Pure Ice brand to its portfolio, posted a 4.6% boost in U.S. net sales during the second quarter, due in large part to higher sales of Revlon color cosmetics.

In the United States, net sales totaled $203.9 million, up 4.6% when compared with $194.9 million in the year-ago period.

Total net sales rose 1.7% to $357.1 million, fueled by higher sales of Revlon and Almay color cosmetics and Revlon ColorSilk hair color. Excluding foreign currency fluctuations of $9 million, net sales increased 4.2%.
