The IDF announced Thursday the appointment of Petra Wilson, who formerly served as Cisco's senior director of the European health and care business solutions team, working with the World Health Organization, the European Commission, governments and others.

BRUSSELS — The CEO of Delhaize Group's European division has resigned, effective Oct. 31, the Belgian supermarket operator said.

Delhaize said Stefan Descheemaeker had decided to resign as CEO of Delhaize Europe, though the company did not give a reason. Delhaize said that as a result of Descheemaeker's departure, Delhaize Group EVP and Delhaize Group Southeast Europe and Asia CEO Kostas Macheras would report directly to group CEO Pierre-Olivier Beckers, as would Delhaize Belgium CEO Dirk Van den Berghe, effective Nov. 1.

BRUSSELS — The Food and Drug Administration has approved a new usage for a drug made by UCB, the drug maker said Monday.

UCB announced the approval of Cimzia (certolizumab pegol) for psoriatic arthritis in adults. Psoriatic arthritis is an inflammatory, autoimmune condition that causes pain, swelling and stiffness around the joints, usually combined with the skin lesions of psoriasis. The drug was already approved to treat rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn's disease.

BRUSSELS, Belgium — Belgian international food retailer Delhaize Group, whose U.S. banners include Hannaford, Sweetbay and Food Lion, has announced that president and CEO Pierre-Olivier Beckers intends to retire from his executive role by the end of this year.
 
As part of Delhaize’s succession plan, Beckers will stay in his post until a new CEO is appointed and a smooth transition has taken place, the company stated. He will continue to serve on the board, in a nonexecutive capacity, after stepping down as CEO.

BRUSSELS — The Delhaize Group shakeup continues as news circulates that its Sweetbay Supermarket division will shutter 33 underperforming stores in Florida by mid-February, according to a report on Tampa Bay Online.

The closures, which are part of a broader reorganization plan, will results in the loss of about 2,000 jobs in Florida and changes for its pharmacy customers. Following the closures, Sweetbay will operate 72 locations.

BRUSSELS — Delhaize's U.S. division has a new leader.

The supermarket conglomerate announced that Roland Smith will serve as Delhaize America's president and CEO, as well as EVP of the Delhaize Group, effective Oct. 15. Smith is replacing Ronald Hodge, who will be retiring from his post this year. Hodge will serve in an advisory role to ensure a smooth transition.

Each 12-oz. glass bottle is emblazoned with a corresponding colorful candid photo submitted by Jones Soda fans, and the four-pack itself is shrink-wrapped in a festive covering depicting holiday wrapping paper and a bright red bow, Jones said.

In line with World Diabetes Day, which was held Nov. 14, the International Diabetes Foundation projected that the number of people in the world living with diabetes is expected to rise from 366 million in 2011 to 552 million by 2030.

BRUSSELS — In line with World Diabetes Day, which was held Nov. 14, the International Diabetes Foundation projected that the number of people in the world living with diabetes is expected to rise from 366 million in 2011 to 552 million by 2030.

IDF said the statistic equates to approximately three new cases every 10 seconds, or almost 10 million per year. The organization also estimated that as many as 183 million people are unaware that they have diabetes.

The figures were released in the fifth edition of IDF's Diabetes Atlas.

BRUSSELS — Anheuser-Busch InBev announced that it is expanding its Bud Light portfolio with what it is calling "a trendy blue-bottle line extension."

The company said that Bud Light Platinum appeals to a key group of beer drinkers and expands consumer occasions and that the introduction is part of the company's plan to accelerate growth of Bud Light in the United States.

Bud Light Platinum is expected to roll out in Jan. 2012.

BOSTON and BRUSSELS — Drug maker UCB and Harvard University have entered a research alliance that is designed to advance ongoing Harvard research projects along the drug development pathway.

UCB said it will bring its expertise in antibody generation and medicinal chemistry into the alliance and will provide up to $6 million over two years to fund specific innovative research projects led by Harvard scientists. The collaboration focuses on the central nervous system and immunology, UCB said.

And that interest is likely to pick up in the coming months, GSK CEO Andrew Witty told reporters during a meeting of pharmaceutical industry executives.

And that interest is likely to pick up in the coming months, GSK CEO Andrew Witty told reporters during a meeting of pharmaceutical industry executives.

The interest is coming from both established consumer healthcare companies, as well as private equity houses, the report noted.
