PHILADELPHIA — Patients once considered "aspirin resistant" may not be resistant to aspirin after all, according to a study published online by Circulation, the journal of the American Heart Association. Rather, the protective coating around the aspirin to prevent stomach issues may be delaying the absorption of aspirin, leading clinicians to believe that patients are aspirin resistant. 

 BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Aspirin has the potential to block tumor growth in certain patients with colorectal cancer, according to an editorial in the Oct. 25, 2012 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine by a University of Alabama at Birmingham oncologist. In a study that appears in the same issue, researchers examined the use of aspirin in the treatment outcomes of patients with colorectal cancer.

DALLAS — Men who have been treated for prostate cancer, either with surgery or radiation, could benefit from taking aspirin regularly, according to a multicenter study published in Tuesday's issue of the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

ATLANTA — A large new observational study published Friday found more evidence of an association between daily aspirin use and modestly lower cancer mortality, but suggested any reduction may be smaller than that observed in a recent analysis. The study appeared online in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

LAS VEGAS — Annapolis, Md.-based St. Joseph Consumer Health last week unveiled a new St. Joseph-branded line of cough-cold products formulated for patients with high blood pressure at the ECRM Cough & Cold and Allergy EPPS.

The products all feature "decongestant-free" on the package underneath the St. Joseph brand, long known for its 81-mg daily aspirin regimen. The lineup includes a multi-symptom day/night caplet formulation, two formulations targeting cold and flu symptoms and a cough tablet SKU.

PHILADELPHIA — Aspirin taken within five days before cardiac surgery is associated with a significant decrease in the risk of major postoperative complications, including renal failure, an intensive care unit stay, and even early death (30-day mortality), according to findings from an observational cohort study by researchers at Thomas Jefferson University and the University of California Davis Medical Center that are set to appear in the journal Annals of Surgery.

NEW YORK — A new study published in the July 19 online edition of BMJ found that heart disease patients that opt out of taking low-dose aspirin daily put themselves at a higher risk for heart attack.

MORRISTOWN, N.J. — Bayer on Tuesday introduced its new Bayer Advanced Aspirin, billed as relieving pain “twice as fast” as the previous Extra Strength Bayer Aspirin.

NEW YORK — An investigational drug made by Bristol-Myers Squibb works better than aspirin in reducing the risk of complications in certain patients with heart rhythm problems, according to results of a late-stage clinical trial published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Bristol said results of the phase-3 study comparing apixaban with aspirin showed that in patients with atrial fibrillation who were not suited to take the drug warfarin, apixaban was more effective than aspirin in reducing stroke and systemic embolism.
