MINONG, Wis. — Jack Link’s Beef Jerky announced its sponsorship of the nation's largest bike scavenger hunt.

The beef jerky brand said it would be the presenting sponsor of the New Belgium Brewing Urban Assault Ride, which is a bike race/obstacle course. The event is open to anyone ages 7 years or older and includes such team divisions as coed, male, female and family, with prizes awarded to the top three teams in each division.

The 2011 Urban Assault Ride will take place in the following locations:

DEERFIELD, Ill. — One of the nation's largest drug store chains announced its sponsorship of nationwide life-saving trainings hosted by the American Red Cross.

The “Gabrielle Giffords Honorary Save-a-Life Saturday” event, which will be held March 19, will offer free training and instruction on hands-only CPR, controlling external bleeding, and recognizing and managing shock. The event is named after Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who was critically injured, along with several other citizens, during the recent Tucson, Ariz., shooting. Six people were killed.

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — Supermarket retailer Fresh & Easy has added four more GreenChill-certified stores this year, a distinction developed by the Environmental Protection Agency's GreenChill Partnership.

The company, which has stores in California, Arizona and Nevada, now has the most GreenChill-certified stores than any other retailer in the nation. Fresh & Easy opened its first GreenChill store in September 2010.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Cough-cold supplier Matrixx on Thursday credited tough comparisons against the prior season’s high pre-season inventory purchases by retailers due to the publicity of the H1N1 flu outbreak for the lower level of sales for the quarter ended Dec. 31, 2010.

The company reported net sales of $20.3 million, down 29%. However, a lift in late December cough-cold illness rates holds promise for the second half of the season.

TUCSON, Ariz. — Safeway announced that it has formed a fund to aid the victims of the recent shooting that occurred in one of its Tucson stores.

The company launched the fund with an initial contribution of $100,000 from the Safeway Foundation, and is encouraging in-store contributions from Safeway customers and community members in the company’s Arizona stores.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Matrixx Initiatives on Tuesday announced that it has entered into a definitive merger agreement to be acquired by affiliates of private equity firm H.I.G. Capital.

The board of directors of Matrixx unanimously has approved the merger agreement. Under the terms of the merger agreement, affiliates of H.I.G. will commence a tender offer to purchase all of the outstanding shares for approximately $75.2 million.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. Matrixx Initiatives on Monday reported a decline of 17% in net sales to $21.3 million for the company’s second quarter ended Sept. 30. The decline, Matrixx president and CEO Bill Hemelt explained to analysts Tuesday morning, represented a course correction of sorts. The sales decline was “due to lower upfront buys by retailers,” Hemelt said. Last year, all of the hype around H1N1 drove retailers to heavily stock in cough-and-cold supplies.
