In January, I offered Drug Store News readers a look at the pharmacy and technology trends facing our industry for the year. Here we are in June (can you believe it?), so I thought we should have a progress check and update for the back half of 2013.

Eileen Breslin, dean and professor of the School of Nursing at the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio, has been elected to serve a two-year term as president of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing.

WASHINGTON — Eileen Breslin, dean and professor of the School of Nursing at the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio, has been elected to serve a two-year term as president of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing.

Breslin assumed the presidency at AACN’s 2014 Spring Business Meeting held March 24 in Washington, D.C.

"We completed the rollout to 10 stores in February and plan to reach 150 stores in the City," Wasson said.

The Little Clinic, which is a subsidiary of Kroger, has clinics inside Kroger stores in Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee and Ohio; King Soopers in Colorado, Fry’s Food Stores in Arizona and JayC in Indiana.

The new Dial Vitamin Boost Body Wash comes in two varieties: Amazing B and the oil-infused Super C. Dial Yogurt Body Wash also has two variants, which include Dial Greek Yogurt and Dial Frozen Yogurt.

As part of a study conducted with the University of Arizona, Avella Specialty Pharmacy proved the value of pharmacist intervention in improving patient outcomes, at least in renal transplant patients, to the tune of $27,852 per month, Avella announced.

PHOENIX — As part of a study conducted with the University of Arizona, Avella Specialty Pharmacy proved the value of pharmacist intervention in improving patient outcomes, at least in renal transplant patients, to the tune of $27,852 per month, Avella announced Thursday. The study found that participants in the intervention group had a statistically significant improvement in adherence rates over patients in the control group who did not have a contract or receive support to ensure adherence to their monthly medication therapy.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — A division of Kroger Co. has placed an initial order for Alkaline88, a bottled water brand produced using a proprietary electrolysis beverage process.

The Alkaline Water Co. announced the order Wednesday, from Smiths Food and Drug Stores, which operates 131 stores in Utah, Nevada, New Mexico, Arizona, Montana, Idaho and Wyoming. Alkaline sells the water in 3-L and 1-gal. sizes.

The University of Arizona College of Pharmacy is switching from a MacOS-based platform to an IBM system running Linux to manage growth of big data.

ARMONK, N.Y. — The University of Arizona College of Pharmacy is switching from a MacOS-based platform to an IBM system running Linux to manage growth of big data.

IBM said Wednesday that the Tucson, Ariz., college was using an IBM zEnterprise mainframe running the IBM DB2 database software on Linux to analyze and process 3 million medical claims per week. A business partner of IBM, Sirius Computer Solutions, helped the college move to the new system, which reduces the time it takes to process medical claims by 60%.

MOUNT PROSPECT, Ill. — The National Criminal Justice Association has recognized a program to combat prescription drug abuse in Arizona as the best such program in the west of the country.

The National Association of Boards of Pharmacy said the Arizona Prescription Drug Misuse and Abuse Initiative received the NCJA's 2013 Western Region Outstanding Criminal Justice Program Award. The program involves state agencies and organizations, including the Arizona State Board of Pharmacy.

McKinney, 57, has been VP of operations at the company's Ralphs division since 2007. He succeeds Jon Flora, who passed away unexpectedly two weeks ago.

Flora started his career at 15 with Dillon’s in western Kansas. When Dillon’s merged with Kroger in 1983, he was named SVP.

PHOENIX — A managed Medicaid health plan has selected Avella Specialty Pharmacy as its preferred specialty pharmacy partner, Avella said Wednesday.

Avella announced that under the agreement, with Care1st Health Plan Arizona, Avella would deliver specialty services to members, dispensing specialty drugs and providing patient consultation and adherence monitoring. Care1st contracts with MedImpact Healthcare Systems for pharmacy benefit management services.
