The Food and Drug Administration is creating a new task force to support the development of new drugs for bacterial infections, the agency said Monday.

SILVER SPRING, Md. — The Food and Drug Administration is creating a new task force to support the development of new drugs for bacterial infections, the agency said Monday.

The FDA said the Antibacterial Drug Development Task Force would assist in developing and revising guidance related to development of antibiotics, as required by the Generating Antibiotic Incentives Now Title of the FDA Safety and Innovation Act, which president Barack Obama signed into law on July 9.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — A drug maker and medical research institute will work together to identify new treatments for bacterial and viral infections.

AstraZeneca and the Broad Institute, owned jointly by Harvard University and MIT, announced Monday that they would collaborate for two years to develop medicines to treat severe infections, saying the identification of high-quality chemicals for the development of new drugs was a significant challenge. The two will use the Broad Institute's collection of 100,000 chemicals known as diversity-oriented synthesis, or DOS compounds.

Study: Topical antibiotics prevent infection from small cuts, abrasions

Minor, uncomplicated wounds, such as the typical cuts and scrapes of childhood, are less likely to become infected when kept clean and moist and treated with topical antibiotics, according to a literature review published online Friday in the Annals of Emergency Medicine, the peer-reviewed scientific journal for the American College of Emergency Physicians.
