The company said guests can receive free cholesterol screenings at Winn-Dixie pharmacies and is partnering with the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality to offer a free treating high cholesterol guide, which is available in English and Spanish, in honor of American Heart Month.

GREENVILLE, S.C. — Bi-Lo and Winn-Dixie Stores on Monday announced that the companies will merge to create an organization of approximately 690 grocery stores and 63,000 employees in eight states throughout the southeastern United States.

Under the terms of the definitive agreement, BI-LO will acquire all of the outstanding shares of Winn-Dixie stock in the merger. Winn-Dixie shareholders will receive $9.50 in cash per share of Winn-Dixie common stock, representing a premium of approximately 75% over the closing price of Winn-Dixie common stock on Dec. 16.

After piloting a food recovery program in 2009 and expanding it to all of its stores last year, Winn-Dixie announced Monday that it has provided more than 6 million meals to the affiliate food banks of Feeding America.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — After piloting a food recovery program in 2009 and expanding it to all of its stores last year, Winn-Dixie announced Monday that it has provided more than 6 million meals to the affiliate food banks of Feeding America.

The grocer partners with local Feeding America affiliate food banks in Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi and Louisiana, donating perishable items that reach their "sell by" date but are still usable and nutritious to feed the hungry, Winn-Dixie said.

Winn-Dixie is looking to raise funds for a nonprofit organization that helps veterans injured in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Winn-Dixie is looking to raise funds for a nonprofit organization that helps veterans injured in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The retailer said that it is reintroducing a commemorative bottled water to raise funds for the Wounded Warrior Project. For every 24-pack sold through the 4th of July weekend, 10 cents will be donated to the organization, up to a total of $100,000.

This marks the second year Winn-Dixie is selling the specially packaged water to assist WWP.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Winn-Dixie president, chairman and CEO Peter Lynch expressed confidence in the grocer as it heads into its fourth quarter, maintaining that the grocer's estimated adjusted EBITDA will come in at the lower end of the $100 million to $130 million range for fiscal 2011, a 52-week period ending June 29, in light of relatively flat third-quarter results.

So far, the fourth quarter is looking especially positive, Lynch said. “[Identical-store] sales are low single-digit, and the performance is strong,” he told analysts Tuesday morning.

American Greetings said it is extending its partnership with Taylor Swift with the new Taylor Swift spring collection, which includes 28 designs and features a "handmade" format. In addition to these personal touches, there also are six new music cards featuring several of Taylor's hit songs, including "Love Story," and "You Belong With Me."

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Winn-Dixie Stores on Wednesday named Laurence Appel SVP retail operations, reporting to Peter Lynch, Winn-Dixie's chairman, CEO and president.

Appel succeeds Frank Eckstein, who has retired from his current role but will continue to serve in an advisory capacity until the end of fiscal year 2011.

Appel joined Winn-Dixie in 2002 and served as general counsel, corporate secretary and SVP human resources prior to the new appointment.
