The month of March came in like a lion, indeed, but not because of the weather. The month began with a roar as a group of the largest and most influential pharmacy associations and chains came together to form the Patient Access to Pharmacists’ Care Coalition, or PAPCC, in an effort to secure formal federal recognition of pharmacists as healthcare providers.

BASEL, Switzerland — A drug marketed by Novartis and Incyte Corp. extends the lives of patients with a life-threatening blood cancer to a greater extent than conventional therapy or placebo, according to results of a late-stage clinical trial.

Novartis announced the results of two phase-3 studies of Jakavi (ruxolitinib) in patients with myelofibrosis, presenting them at the American Society of Hematology's annual meeting and exposition in New Orleans.

FLINT, Mich. — The American Society of Health System Pharmacists has granted accreditation to a post-graduate program offered by specialty pharmacy Diplomat, the company said.

Diplomat, which recently shortened its name from Diplomat Specialty Pharmacy, received ASHP accreditation for its postgraduate year one, or PGY1 pharmacy residency program.

The prerequisites for taking the pharmacy technician certification exam are simple, the American Society of Health System Pharmacists noted. Basic requirements include a high school diploma, GED or foreign equivalent, and a record free of any felony or drug-related convictions.

According to healthcare analytics firm IMS Health, while this represents a small and highly concentrated portion of the overall drug market, it includes a number of critical drugs used to treat cancer, infections, cardiovascular disease, central nervous system disorders and pain.

The “TRINITY” study of Tribenzor (olmesartan medoxomil, amlodipine besylate and hydrochlorothiazide) showed the drug was well-tolerated and effective in patients ranging in age from younger than 65 years to older than 65 years, after a year.

INDIANAPOLIS — Drug maker Eli Lilly will present data from more than 30 studies at the American Society of Clinical Oncology’s annual meeting in Chicago next month, the company said Monday.

Studies will include “PARAMOUNT,” a late-stage clinical trial investigating the drug Alimta (pemetrexed) in patients with advanced non-squamous non-small cell lung cancer, as well as studies on Gemzar (gemcitabine) and Erbitux (cetuximab) with partner companies Bristol-Myers Squibb and Merck KGaA.
