LOS ANGELES — During the American Pharmacists Association's 2013 Annual Meeting and Exposition here, the Cardinal Health Foundation and APhA on Tuesday awarded the second annual APhA GenerationRx Award of Excellence to Anthony Tommasello, who was chosen in recognition of his work in the area of substance abuse education. Throughout his career, Tommasello has conducted research and provided education to a wide range of patient populations at risk for substance abuse.

WASHINGTON — The American Pharmacists Association has a new president-elect, the group said Thursday.

The APhA announced the election of Matthew Osterhaus, who will succeed Steven Simenson at the conclusion of the 2014 APhA Annual Meeting and Exposition in Orlando, Fla., on March 31, 2014. Osterhaus is the co-owner of Osterhaus Pharmacy in Maquoketa, Iowa, and an APhA trustee.

Joseph Williams, the former CEO of Warner-Lambert, was named the recipient of the American Pharmacists Association Foundation's 2012 Jacob W. Miller Award, the APhA Foundation said.

WASHINGTON — Joseph Williams, the former CEO of Warner-Lambert, was named the recipient of the American Pharmacists Association Foundation's 2012 Jacob W. Miller Award, the APhA Foundation said.

The organization said it recognized Williams for his leadership and service to the APhA Foundation capital campaign and advisory committee. Williams also served as APhA honorary president from 2004 to 2005.

WASHINGTON — The American Pharmacists Association has appointed Stacia Spridgen as director of its federal pharmacy program, the group said Wednesday.

The APhA said Spridgen, a retired Army lieutenant colonel, would be responsible for all aspects of the APhA's federal pharmacy programs, including coordination of the annual Federal Forum and oversight management of the Department of Defense Joint Forces Pharmacy Seminar, fostering a collaborative alliance between the APhA and the federal pharmacy sector and developing relationships in the pharmaceutical industry.

WASHINGTON — The American Pharmacists Association has elected Steven Simenson as its president for the 2012-2013 term, the group said.

Simenson, president and managing partner of Goodrich Pharmacy, a six-store chain based in Ramsey, Minn., will succeed Jenelle Sobotka; he also was elected to a second term on the APhA's board of trustees. Daniel Hussar of Philadelphia was elected as honorary president for 2012-2013.

WASHINGTON — The American Pharmacists Association is seeking nominations for its annual practitioner and scientific awards and honors, the organization said Wednesday.

The APhA said it would present the winners at the annual APhA Annual Meeting and Exposition in New Orleans next March. The APhA Academy of Pharmacy Practice and Management administers the practitioner awards and honors, while the APhA Academy of Pharmaceutical Research and Science administers the scientific awards and honors. The deadline for submissions is Sept. 15.

The APhA Foundation announced Tuesday the appointment of Mindy Smith, who will lead the foundation’s operations, research objectives and strategic direction, providing support and guidance to the board of directors and monitoring pharmacy trends. Smith currently is CEO of the Arizona Pharmacy Alliance and previously served as executive director of the Wyoming Pharmacy Association.
