The American Pharmacists Association Foundation has created two new scholarships that will be presented at the APhA’s annual gathering next year.

WASHINGTON — The American Pharmacists Association Foundation has created two new scholarships that will be presented at the APhA’s annual gathering next year.

The George F. Archambault Scholarship, created by the Archambault Foundation, and the Charlie Thomas Scholarship, created by Phi Lambda Sigma, will be presented at the 2012 APhA Annual Meeting and Convention in New Orleans during the Contributors’ Breakfast. Phi Lambda Sigma is the national Pharmacy Leadership Society.

WASHINGTON — The American Pharmacists Association is seeking nominations for its annual practitioner and scientific awards and honors, the organization said Wednesday.

The APhA said it would present the winners at the annual APhA Annual Meeting and Exposition in New Orleans next March. The APhA Academy of Pharmacy Practice and Management administers the practitioner awards and honors, while the APhA Academy of Pharmaceutical Research and Science administers the scientific awards and honors. The deadline for submissions is Sept. 15.

WASHINGTON — The philanthropic arm of the American Pharmacists Association has appointed a new executive director.

The APhA Foundation announced Tuesday the appointment of Mindy Smith, who will lead the foundation’s operations, research objectives and strategic direction, providing support and guidance to the board of directors and monitoring pharmacy trends. Smith currently is CEO of the Arizona Pharmacy Alliance and previously served as executive director of the Wyoming Pharmacy Association.

Pharmacists in Utah and Ohio have won the 2011 Bowl of Hygeia awards from the American Pharmacists Association Foundation and the National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations, the two organizations announced.

WASHINGTON — Pharmacists in Utah and Ohio have won the 2011 Bowl of Hygeia awards from the American Pharmacists Association Foundation and the National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations, the two organizations announced.

The APhA Foundation and NASPA announced that the Utah Pharmacists Association had given the award to Kathy Goodfellow, owner of Mountain View Pharmacy in Bountiful, Utah, and that the Ohio Pharmacists Association had given it to Mark Dominik of St. Mary’s, Ohio.

The American Pharmacists Association on Monday released its 2010 Pharmacy Today over-the-counter product survey and found that 92% of pharmacists walk a patient to the OTC section to assist with a product selection, noting that the average patient consult takes only three minutes of the patient's time.

The survey also found that when a pharmacist makes an OTC brand recommendation, more than 8-in-10 consumers buy that product.
