The American Pharmacists Association’s Academy of Student Pharmacists has named Phillip R. Oppenheimer, who has led University of the Pacific’s Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences for almost two decades, as the 2014 Outstanding Dean.

STOCKTON, Calif. — The American Pharmacists Association’s Academy of Student Pharmacists has named Phillip R. Oppenheimer, who has led University of the Pacific’s Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences for almost two decades, as the 2014 Outstanding Dean.

The award recognizes Oppenheimer for promoting the education of student pharmacists through community service, leadership and professional activities.

Oppenheimer will receive the award during the American Pharmacists Association annual meeting in Orlando on March 28.

The APhA said the candidates for the position are Virginia Commonwealth University School of Pharmacy professor and community pharmacy residency program director Jean-Venable Goode and Newport Beach, Calif.-based Westcliff Compounding Pharmacy owner Michael Pavlovich. The Acetaminophen Awareness Coalition last week issued their annual call for consumers to "Double Check, Don't Double Up" their cold medicines for acetaminophen content in an effort to avoid accidental overdose.

WASHINGTON — The Acetaminophen Awareness Coalition last week issued their annual call for consumers to "Double Check, Don't Double Up" their cold medicines for acetaminophen content in an effort to avoid accidental overdose. 

Acetaminophen is found in more than 600 different medicines, the Coalition noted. Taking more than directed is an overdose and can lead to liver damage.

The Joint Commission of Pharmacy Practitioners and representatives of nursing, medicine, education, pharmacy practice and consumer groups gathered last month at the Hotel Monaco in Alexandria, Va., for the conference, with American Pharmacists Association EVP Thomas Menighan serving as chairman.

The head of the American Pharmacists Association has been tapped as the chairman of the Pharmacy Quality Alliance, the PQA said Tuesday.

SPRINGFIELD, Va. — The head of the American Pharmacists Association has been tapped as the chairman of the Pharmacy Quality Alliance, the PQA said Tuesday.

The PQA announced the appointment of APhA EVP and CEO Thomas Menighan, who will succeed Judith Cahill, who has served on the organization's board since its 2006 inception, including a recently completed two-year stint as chairwoman.
