Through a collaboration with the American Diabetes Association, the diabetes division of drug maker Eli Lilly has committed to send 89 children to diabetes camp this summer.

INDIANAPOLIS and ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Through a collaboration with the American Diabetes Association, the diabetes division of drug maker Eli Lilly has committed to send 89 children to diabetes camp this summer.

Lilly Diabetes said it donated the camp scholarships — a fund totaling $89,000 — to the American Diabetes Association's 2012 camp scholarship fund. More than 400 diabetes camping programs exist worldwide serving approximately 30,000 youth with diabetes and their families, Lilly Diabetes said.

According to the SEARCH for Diabetes in Youth study, which analyzed responses of 1,514 patients:

  • Nearly 5% self-reported that they didn't have their blood pressure checked at all or most visits;

The studies, funded by the American Diabetes Association/Medtronic Technology in Diabetes Fellowship, will utilize Medtronic's CareLink database — a database of anonymous continuous glucose monitoring and insulin pump-derived data — to assess, evaluate and correlate the application of this and similar technologies used by patients with insulin-treated diabetes.

The ADA and Together Rx Access said Wednesday that the cards can help millions of eligible uninsured patients receive savings of 25% to 40% on branded drugs, as well as savings on generics. Nearly 26 million people in the United States are living with diabetes, mostly Type 2 diabetes, many of whom lack health insurance.
