The do-it-yourself beauty trend continues to blossom as the at-home beauty devices market enjoyed robust double-digit growth globally during 2012, according research by Kline & Co.

According to Kline's "Beauty Devices: Global Market Analysis and Opportunities" report, the at-home beauty devices market grew nearly 22% in 2012, with underdeveloped markets and skin care needs, such as anti-aging and cellulite/body toning, yet to be fully addressed. In light of this, Kline stated that the market's potential is still being realized.

PITTSBURGH — Mylan has launched a generic contraceptive therapy, the drug maker said Tuesday.

Mylan, through its Mylan Pharmaceuticals subsidiary, announced the launch of norethindrone tablets in the 0.35-mg strength. The drug is a generic version of Actavis' Nor-Q.D. tablets, which are taken on a 28-day cycle to prevent pregnancy. Mylan is partnering with Famy Care, which filed for and received Food and Drug Administration approval for the drug.

The move comes in light of the increasing focus on the public health cost of hospital readmissions. Two research grants of up to $600,000 each are expected to be awarded.

Emdeon announced Friday that it would expand the capabilities of the Emdeon Payment Network, a large, automated payment distribution system for the healthcare industry. The expansion includes the recent opening of a new 100,000-sq.-ft. facility in St. Louis dedicated to supporting the network, which currently reaches about 60,000 pharmacies, 500,000 providers, 81,000 dentists, 1,200 hospitals and 300 labs.

SAN ANTONIO — Operation Homefront and Dollar Tree on Monday joined forces for the upcoming pre-school season to gather school supplies for military children across the country. Beginning Tuesday, supplies can be purchased by customers at the more than 4,000 Dollar Tree and Deal$ stores nationwide and placed in collection boxes in each store. 

The Back to School Brigade program is a nationwide campaign by Operation Homefront and Dollar Tree, now in its sixth season. Last year, Dollar Tree patrons donated more than $3 million of supplies nationwide.

Sales for the quarter ended May 4 rose about 23% to $582.7 million, compared with $474.1 million in the year-ago period. Same-store sales increased 6.7%, including the impact of e-commerce sales.

Shareholders of Heinz will receive $72.50 per share in cash in the sale, whose total price is $28 billion. As a result of the deal, Heinz's stock is no longer trading on the New York Stock Exchange, and 3G Capital partner Bernardo Hees has been appointed as CEO.
