NEW YORK — The Northeast is still recovering from one of the worst disasters it has ever faced. Many residents remain without electrical power, while others have lost their entire homes, businesses, workplaces and in a growing number of cases, their lives.

QUINCY, Mass. — An event sponsored earlier this week by supermarket chain Stop & Shop provided information to kids designed to encourage them to live healthier lifestyles.

The Healthy Kids Summit, which took place Monday at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Mass., attracted more than 300 residents, customers, families and children and featured guidance from community and health experts, such as New England Patriots safety Patrick Chung and leaders from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and the YMCA.

QUINCY, Mass. — Stop & Shop is opening a new store that will include new features that emphasize customer experience, the company said.

Stop & Shop, a division of the U.S. subsidiary of Dutch supermarket operator Ahold, said the Wayland, Mass., store would include nine complementary electric car charging stations, as well as numerous energy-efficient features. The store's grand opening is scheduled for Nov. 16.

CHICAGO — An online grocery delivery service is launching "virtual grocery stores" at commuter rail stations across the country.

Peapod.com, owned by the U.S. subsidiary of Dutch supermarket operator Royal Ahold, announced it would launch more than 100 of the virtual grocery stores at commuter rail stations in Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Washington, Chicago, New Jersey and Connecticut. Commuters in the markets Peapod serves spend an hour in transit to and from work each day, according to Census data.

QUINCY, Mass. — Stop & Shop customers and associates donated nearly $400,000 through the company's first-ever Healthy Ideas Food for Friends hunger relief program.

QUINCY, Mass., and PURCHASE, N.Y. — School is back in session, and so is Stop & Shop's rewards program.

Customers once again are encouraged to sign up for the A+ School Rewards school fundraiser, a program launched in 2009 to support local schools throughout participating markets. During the 2012-2013 school year, Stop & Shop said it will donate $2.5 million through the program. More than $4 million has been donated to local schools since the program's inception.

PURCHASE, N.Y. — Stop & Shop has expanded its gas rewards programs to customers in New Jersey.

QUINCY, Mass. — Peapod has launched a new service through which customers can order their groceries online and pick them up at a store.

The Peapod Pick-Up service initially has been rolled out to a Stop & Shop store located in Abington, Mass. For a limited time, Peapod Pick-up will be offered free of charge ($2.95 value) and shoppers can choose a convenient one-hour pickup time between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. Sunday through Friday, and 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday.

QUINCY, Mass. — Stop & Shop once again is offering flu vaccinations at all of its in-store pharmacies.

Flu shots are provided any time the pharmacy is open and are administered by Stop & Shop's in-store pharmacists. The cost for the flu shot is $30 and most major insurance plans along with Medicare are accepted. Stop & Shop noted that its pharmacists also are available to provide on-site flu clinics at workplaces.

SALISBURY, N.C. — Food Lion customers can support their favorite schools when they participate in the MVP Classroom Rewards program.

When customers shop with their MVP cards, a portion of their grocery bills spent only on qualified store-brand products is automatically credited to the shoppers' local school of choice. Donations up to $2,500 will be distributed three times per year to schools in January, May and September.

CARLISLE, Pa. — Royal Ahold's American division has split its EVP marketing and merchandising position in two, the company said.

Ahold USA announced the appointment of Erik Keptner to the newly created position of EVP marketing. The search for an EVP merchandising is ongoing, the company said. Ahold USA operates the Giant-Carlisle, Giant-Landover and Stop & Shop chains and the online grocery service Peapod.
